Welcome to Screened Inn Cottage c. 1925! This adorable duplex cottage used to be the Enlisted Men's mess hall for Fort Screven.

This screened in porch is perfect for mint julep summer nights or coffee mornings.

Part of Historic Fort Screven area, this is where our stationed soldiers would come and have chow!

Details start the moment you pull into the driveway.

How perfect is this screened-in porch? You can sit here for hours and dream of the past and the future.

So comfy. The other half of the cottage is the Enlisted Men's Mess Hall, right thru that screened door. You can rent both halves, OR have plenty of privacy on either side.

Walking in the front door, you're immediately in the kitchen/dining room/the past. Light paint with bright details makes you feel like you've steppe into a different time.

All I can say is: WOW. Not only did this place feel like a home away from home but mermaid rentals went above and beyond in their communications- they are incredibly friendly, warm and inviting which is so welcoming after a big day of travelling. The rental was spectacular, cozy, bright and FULL of character, the decorating really made it feel like a relaxed vacation and the walk to the beach was very short. I could truly go on and on about our incredible experience here, but I’ll leave it at saying it’s the type of place and experience you’ll tell people about, you’ll have wonderful memories and you’ll be just waiting to book the next time around. We just finished our sixth vacation at Screened Inn. Since our first visit, this is our preferred vacation getaway. It's a cute property on the north side of the island, which we prefer because it is quiet and peaceful, but only a few minutes' walk to the North beach. It is always spotless. And it is very spacious. The interior is exactly like the pictures in the listing. Really cute. The Mermaids are friendly, accommodating and responsive. We are already planning to be back sometime in November-December and again in March.

We always love staying at the lovely and cozy Screened Inn and especially appreciated this year that the house is pet friendly, since our dog sitter fell through. The house is so quaint and we love the retro decor, all the kitchen ammenities, the washer/dryer and a well functioning A/C! One recommendation I would like to make is to please improve the quality of the mattresses. The singles and the queen bed in the living room were particularly old and made it hard to get a good night sleep. We hope we can sleep better the next time we come to Tybee! :)

I was one of four high school classmates from the Class of 1976!!! We absolutely loved our time at the Screened Inn. It is such cozy cottage and the outdoor shower was a bonus! Lots of stories were shared on the Screened Porch. It was simply perfect for us. Would highly recommend this property!!! PS. I loved the music upon arrival. Very nice touch!!! The only suggestion I would make is to provide beach chairs. Packing beach chairs takes up a lot of space when traveling.

What a lovely, well appointed beach cottage! It is well situated on the quiet north end of the island but an easy drop down to south to go to restaurants etc. There’s an easy five minute walk to the beach from the cottage and a wonderful small yard to hang out in. Mermaid Rentals Supplies you with delicious coffee beans for your morning Java and the house is cool and shady. There is one sunroom that’s locked which you can’t enter which was a little bit of a bummer but otherwise the house was just perfect for our weekend getaway. It would be great if there were a few beach supplies such as chairs beach towels umbrella etc. but we totally made it work and felt well cared for by the warm and friendly staff.

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Screened Inn! There was plenty of room to spread out and the porch was a welcome and breezy place to rest. We’ve stayed for a week every summer at Mermaid Cottages’ Screened Inn. We have always had a wonderful stay. Just a few days before our very first trip an electrical storm damaged one of the appliances in another house we had reserved. The staff with Mermaid Cottages proactively contacted us before we arrived and worked out alternative arrangements for our stay. They changed our reservation to the Screened Inn instead of the property we had originally booked. We were so impressed by the Screened Inn and the wonderful service from Mermaid Cottages that we have come back every year since.

The Screened Inn is located on a quite street beside a small park with a playground and walking trail. The beach is just a short walk away.

The staff at Mermaid Cottages are very attentive to our needs and always very courteous.

We highly recommend the Screened Inn and Mermaid Cottages.

Screened Inn provided a quaint, retro and peaceful escape. The property is perfectly located on the quiet north end with a shortcut to the beach. There were beautiful houses to look at during our walk and very few people. We were able to easily social distance on the beach. The walk to the lighthouse and bike rides down the island were very fun - although scorching hot! We had an issue with the AC but there was a repairman at our doorstep within the hour. The mermaids were very available and courteous in our communications. We loved the space and although there was someone staying on the other side of the house, we somehow never saw them or heard them. We appreciated the large doors, beautiful wooden floors and original touches in the house. It’s a special place. As first time visitors to Tybee, we were delighted with the trees and greenery that gave this beach town a very different feel than what we were used to. We hope to return one day!

Another good year with Mermaid Cottages!
My family and I enjoy this very spacious, clean and well located house. Minutes walk to the beach, lighthouse and park. The kitchen is welled stocked with everything you may need and the screened in porch was enjoyed ever evening of our stay.
Opps! I forgot a pair of shoes. The staff responded right away and even shipped the shoes for free.
I would recommend this property to anyone who wanted to enjoy Tybee as much as my family and I do.

We loved Screened Inn! The house was a perfect size for our family of 5. Nice and close to the beach thanks to the secret path. The outside shower was great for cleaning up after the beach, but the little lizards did surprise us! Great beach area, perfect sand, nice and soft. Fifth time in Tybee, fourth time in Screened Inn, first time in summer -- and now hoping to wrangle the troops for another Screened Inn stay in 2020.

Simply put, staying in Screened Inn (and to some extent, Tybee, too) is like opening a time capsule from 1940 or thereabouts. The neighborhood and house layout are perfect for family sorts of activities -- we played baseball in the park behind the house, hit the nearby beach for perhaps four hours every day, and played lots of games and cooked lots of meals. The kitchen is well-stocked, probably the best of any rental property we've experienced.

Sadly, I missed the old Life magazines and children's books we've enjoyed on previous visits -- I guess they just wore out -- and there was no guest book this time; it's always fun to see what others have to say. The vintage Lady's Home Journal and a romance magazine still were there -- but I've read all that!

We may be bad luck; in March 2017 the furnace malfunctioned and on this trip the AC wasn't working when we arrived, but the Mermaids had the problem solved quickly on both occasions. They always are responsive!

Would I recommend Screened Inn? Yes, but only if you promise not to rent it when we want it!

Lovely,quaint, little cottage in a very quiet area. Easy access to the beach. We could walk to beach each day and catch the sunrise and collect shells.(and not have to pay for parking!)
There were only three of us so we each enjoyed having our own bedrooms,although one of the rooms only had twin beds. We didn't cook much so can't really speak to the amenities in the kitchen but there were restaurants close by as well as a local IGA. Cottage was clean and comfortable .Perfect if you are looking for a place to stay that is kind of a throw back in time as to how I remember beach rentals when I was growing up.

As always, clean fresh and welcoming. New decorations have been added and it made everything seemed new. Acupressure of suggestions: probably time to replace the mattresses and a tv in the second bedroom would be nice. My sisters and I like to take our Mother on vacation each year, around Mothers Day. We use the time to renew our bond as "the girls" in the family. The Screened Inn was perfect. We had plenty of room, comfortable beds, a wonderful homey kitchen to cook, and an outstanding screened in porch. Neighbors were friendly, we even made friends with neighborhood pets! We walked to the beach, and the lighthouse, and through the park next door. My mother told us this visit to Tybee was "the best vacation, ever"! We feel like Mermaids now, after our stay in the Mermaid cottage by the sea.

We were impressed from the moment we drove up until the moment we left, but so sad we had to leave. All we could say was, "Wow" when we walked in. This is exactly what a beach cottage should be. Very spacious, relaxing, decorated beautifully. Nostalgic and in a great, residential quiet neighborhood. Close to the beach. Properly named as we spent most of our time on the porch. The manager responded promptly to any questions we had and they made sure we had everything we needed. Very Clean and comfortable. Kitchen had everything we needed. The description said John Mellencamp was a neighbor and the only thing that would have been the icing on the cake would be if he had been on our porch singing us some tunes! Ready to go back next week!!!!

My vacation rental experience lived up to what I thought it would be. Having been told our first property was damaged by the recent hurricane we were immediately given a choice of more expensive rentals at no extra cost by Diane and Jennifer at Mermaid Cottages. We chose the Screened Inn which was a large three bedroom bungalow, it was very clean and had all the amenities one needed for a short or longer stay ,my only gripe is their were no bug deterants supplied or comfy chairs for the garden . Apart from those very minor issues I would highly recommend staying at the Screened Inn with Mermaid cottages.

We so enjoyed our time at the Screened Inn. It was our fifth time staying at a Mermaid Cottage, and this one is our new favorite! It is tucked away, and yet a very short walk to the beach. We love the North end of Tybee. A small side note: there is plenty of room to put a king sized bed in place of the queen in the master bedroom.

This wonderful cottage was an island treasure for our family! We are a family of 7, which includes our five sons, ranging in age from 14-21. The lay out is very unique with many upgrades noted. The pictures do not do it justice as the house is much larger in person and has a retro, historic feel to it. The only thing that would have impressed my sons more would have been larger beds! (They are all very tall and over 6'3"!) The beach access includes a short walk thru a divine neighborhood populated with breathtakingly beautiful beach homes! There are moss-covered oak trees lining the entire neighborhood, and the house backs up to a park which has playground equipment, basketball court, and a bike trail. The historic Lighthouse and North Beach grill are all within walking distance. We rented bikes and enjoyed the beauty of North Beach as well as riding to the Sugar Shack for our ice cream fix.This home will not disappoint! It was hard to leave!

The rooms were nicely decorated. The kitchen was well stocked with necessary tools and dishes. It was great to have a washing machine. The layout was nice for two families staying together because there are many sections that can be closed off. On the negative side, I found a live baby cockroach and a dead adult. One of the bed mattresses is sagging to the floor. The management company was very responsive and proactive. If they remove the bugs this rental will be a great value for your family vacation.

We do take care of the bugs, but as we mention in our policies and emails we send out, while we maintain monthly pest control on all of our homes, the occasional palmetto bug can get in ~ it's just a fact of Southern summer life (the flyers are my favorite). / . Please come again! ~ Jennifer and the Mermaids From our policies and emails ~ Bugs!: Yeah, we hate ’em, too, but roaches and ants are a reality in coastal Georgia, especially during the Summer. Some critters, like the American Cockroach (a.k.a. Palmetto Bug), can even fly inside from their nests outside. We do our best to keep the pests away; all of our properties are cleaned after every rental and receive monthly pest control treatments. As creepy as they may make you feel, an occasional roach or line of ants in this part of the world is a fact of life and does not mean the property has been poorly maintained.

Words can not describe how we love staying at the screened inn cottage. Each year I read other reviews and while not all are addressed or could be, it is always nice to see attempts to accommodate guests suggestions. This was our 3rd year in stow, and things we notice was freshly painted exterior, outside shower replymved, new flower bed(which we enjoyed), and general cleaning of the premises. I would suggest local knowledge of bug sprays "nonatz"" would have been helpful this week. Understandably construction was heard from hurricane recovery off and in during daylight hours.

Simply as a result of booking this rental for our family reunion, I now have the reputation among my family of having my stuff together. Thank you. It was easy. Everyone loved the house! The love and care, and fun, you guys have fixing these places up just shows, and it sets a mood for the whole trip. Just the right amount of funkiness: I can't relax in a place that's too perfect, but everything worked: no sticky doors, holey screens, etc. It was clean and well-maintained. No unpleasant surprises, and plenty of wonderful ones. With all the kid furniture, this would be a great place for a gaggle of rugrats to have a place to go on a rainy day. A short walk to the park, the beach, and the Lighthouse. The house was great, the staff was fantastic on the phone (Hi!), and the app made it so easy for everyone.

Spring (a misnomer) Break 2017 was our fourth trip to Tybee and our third stay in "Screened Inn," an absolutely perfect vacation house for our band of four adults and three children, now 9, 7, and 5. And the high quality of Screened Inn was especially important his year, as the weather was AWFUL -- or at least too cold for words -- the temperature never reached 60 degrees and most of the time didn't reach 50. Anyway, Screened Inn has a big play room/TV room and a nice area in the kitchen for playing games -- and we did LOTS of that. It's also close to the north beach -- not that that was worth much this year -- and the big Tybee Island park is literally in the back yard, so the kids were able to bundle up enough for some playground time and bike riding and a game of baseball against the two adult males. The front yard is fenced in, so no problem sending the five-year-old out alone to kick a ball, and there's a wonderful tree to climb in the parking area.

One day we woke to a horrible burning smell; the blower motor on the furnace had died a smelly death. But the Mermaid people had the repairman there by mid-morning and the blower was replaced and the heat restored by mid-afternoon.

Not sure I'd want to spend a winter in Screened Inn (although we sort-of did this year), as the twin-bed room has windows on two of the three sides and was awfully cold, as was the master bedroom. But the kitchen and playroom were OK.

One of the big Screened Inn advantages (for me) is that the place has a "period" feel and is stocked with reading material from the 1920s through the 1950s. Some of that needs to be taped together (I reorganized the pages on the four Life Magazines from 1940, 1941, 1948, and 1950, so now's the time to get out the tape, Mermaids).

The cook of the party (my wife) says the kitchen is as well stocked with utensils as one could possibly want, and there's also a very large panty that's easy to organize for those (like us) who

So... we decided to come to a cousins wedding with our 15 month old and our 5 month old babies, but did not want to be on the party end of the island. For years my husband has loved the enlisted men's mess hall and has always wanted to stay. Since we were traveling with the 2 kiddos and a nanny, this was the perfect house. All of us had our own space and baths. We pretty much hung out at the huge kitchen table when we were home. The house was spotless and in great shape. Beds were comfortable with nice sheets. We loved the fenced yard for the baby to bump around in. We did arrive after dark and had some trouble finding the driveway, but a quick call to the office got us there. Truly my only complaint (and it's so minor I hate to say it) was that there is very little water pressure in the showers. It is so much larger than the pictures. The rental company even had someone for us to rent high chairs and portable cribs from. The items were waiting on us when we arrived and they picked them up after we left. We will be back to this house for years to come.

I have lost count of my stays at Mermaid Cottages. We have stayed at Screened Inn multiple times and love the location to do walking and going to the beach. The screened in porch is wonderful to sit and drink your morning coffee or in the evening after a busy day of touring in Savannah or going to the beach. It is our perfect girls get away. We always look forward to arriving and dread departing. We love Mermaid Jan. I have recommended Mermaid Cottages to everyone that I know who it going to Tybee and Savannah. We LOVE LOVE LOVED our Tybee Island Beach Cottage, Screened Inn! It was everything we could have hoped for and more! Beginning with the reservation process through our departure-everything was first class! This cottage was adorable, clean, spacious, had everything we needed, including a convenient access to the beach. This vacation was all about relaxation for our family-and we were able to accomplish that mission! We enjoyed the quiet, beautiful neighborhood of historic Fort Screven, & found many things to do, including the short walk to the Light House. Although I was a little worried about the "duplex" nature of this cottage (because the Enlisted Men's Mess Hall cottage is connected) we never felt like we were sharing space with another home-it was private, quiet and adorable! This was the 3rd Mermaid Cottage we have stayed at and while I love them all, Screened Inn may have been our favorite! The location in the quiet Fort Screven neighborhood was perfect. My young daughter enjoyed having the park and playground right behind us. We loved the private access to the North Beach and enjoyed The North Beach Grill for drinks and appetizers while spending the day at the beach. The house itself was amazing. It reminded me of a vintage farmhouse, but on the beach! The floor plan was great for our family of 6 with 3 teenagers and everyone had their own space to hang out. We ate breakfast every morning on the screened porch. The Mermaids were wonderful as usual, especially quick to respond when we needed an extra pillowcase. We will definitely be back next summer!

This is a great property. The rooms were all much bigger than they looked in the pictures. The screen porch and small fenced-in yard are wonderful. Lots of shade from old live oaks. VERY convenient to trail around nearby Jaycee Park and easy access to the beach. The floor pan and room locations are a *little* quirky but actually worked very well for us (we were there with our two small children, and, alternately, my wife's parents and a friend with her child). Lighthouse and the very tasty North Beach Bar & Grill were within easy walking distance. Nice, quiet neighborhood and street. Also, the staff at Mermaid Cottages were very friendly and helpful. We loved Tybee and hope to return next summer!

Welcome to Screened Inn Cottage c. 1925! This adorable duplex cottage used to be the Enlisted Men's mess hall for Fort Screven.

This screened in porch is perfect for mint julep summer nights or coffee mornings.

Part of Historic Fort Screven area, this is where our stationed soldiers would come and have chow!

Details start the moment you pull into the driveway.

How perfect is this screened-in porch? You can sit here for hours and dream of the past and the future.

So comfy. The other half of the cottage is the Enlisted Men's Mess Hall, right thru that screened door. You can rent both halves, OR have plenty of privacy on either side.

Walking in the front door, you're immediately in the kitchen/dining room/the past. Light paint with bright details makes you feel like you've steppe into a different time.

How cute is this kitchen?? Front door to the left, master bathroom/bedroom in front of you (on the right) and twin bedroom to the far right.
